Bandwidth in web hosting

In website hosting, the term “bandwidth” is often incorrectly used to describe the amount of data transferred to or from the website or server within a prescribed period of time, for example bandwidth consumption accumulated over a month measured in Gigabyte per month. The more accurate phrase used for this meaning of a maximum amount of data transfer each month or given period is monthly data transfer.

Consider this analogy:

• Rented Water Tank = web-server that hosts your website,
• Water company = hosting company where your web-server resides,
• Water = files, data, images, etc. that comprise your website,
• Pipe = the internet,
• Quantity of water delivered = bandwidth consumption,
• You = patron / visitor of your website which is hosted on aforementioned web-server.

There’s a pipe that delivers water from your rented water tank to your home. As you request water, the water company delivers it to you. All the while, they are keeping track of how much water was delivered to you, during a billing cycle. You have a contract with the water company in which they agree to charge you a fixed dollar amount per billing cycle, provided you do not request more water than the allowable quantity, as defined in your contract. If you do request more water, they will not deny you … but you will incur additional charges for the extra water requested / delivered.

With that example in mind, web-pages typically equate to a small quantity of water … while images, videos, PDFs and other similar media can potentially equate to large quantities of water being delivered by your water company. The accumulated total can grow rather quickly, especially when your website is popular / visited by many people.

It started the other day (Tuesday) when I logged into my PayPal account and I needed to switch the primary email address.  When I did I got a notice that I had to contact customer service to verify that I was the owner on the account.  Well I was a bit busy and one thing lead to another and I completely forgot to do it.

So yesterday I had to switch it again to send an invoice to a customer.  No mind you, normally I don’t do this as my carts go through PayPal automatically.  So I went ahead and called PayPal.

After going through their loop process to talk to a live human being, I got this guy who was going to switch it for me.  He then goes into this whole thing, which honestly I can’t remember it all, but it was a text book answer and he seemed to be reading it from a script.  Not to mention he spoke very broken English.   So I asked him if I had to call in every time that I wanted to switch the primary (now remember again, I don’t do this to often).  He then gives me the same answer.  I told him “look.. just a yes or no question… Do I have to call in everytime?”  He then offers to switch me over to the security department.  I was floored!  Why couldn’t he do that in the first place when I asked?

So I get over to the security department and tell the lady why I’m calling.  She then switches the primary email for me and she tells me that she sees that it’s been a while since I have logged in and switched.  Then a bell goes off.  I then proceed to tell her that I did change my ISP a few months back and asked her if this is why I’m getting this.  She then tells me that it is very possible as this was not my “normal” ISP and if I hadn’t logged in for a while to change anything then I wouldn’t have known about this.

So then we get the talking about security and that and she informs me that they have a new Security Key Card that can be used for your PayPal account.  I ask her what that is.  She tells me “you know when you log in and you enter your email address and password?  if you only have the email address and password then anyone can log into your acccount.  With the Security Key Card what is does is generate a random code that you enter before logging in completely to PayPal.  So when you log in you enter your email address, password, and then this code.  The code is never the same.  You also can have this linked to your cell phone once you activate the card.”  

I was floored!  How great is that?  Less chance of having someone hack your accoun as I know people that this has happened to.  She then proceeds to ask me if I would like to have one?  But of course!

So I thanked her and then proceeded to check this out.  The cost of this card is only $5 and there is no monthly charge.

Websites are a bit easy to follow or understand if you think of your site (or any site for that matter) as a house.  Why a house you ask?  It’s very simple and the following will help you better understand.

Domain = Address

Now when you want visitors they need an address to get there right?  When you receive your mail you need an address right?  Same rule applies to a domain.  People need to know where you are located and where to send mail.  Just like your house uses numbers and an address to locate you, domains use the same principal.  The wording is linked to the DNS (Domain Name Servers) that your site resides in, thus, giving you an address to use and people are able to locate you.

Foundation = Hosting

Well now you got your address you need to have a place to build.  Hosting is where your site begins the transformation from a space or lot into a house or site.  Generally with your hosting you have various tools to use to build.  Just like a contractor uses tools to build the house you use tools (programs and/or scripts) to build your site.

Site = House

Reason for this is because your site is your house.  You have many pages or rooms.  This is the whole house or site put together.    You have décor, a front door, a back door, maybe even a side door, and other rooms in your house.  Same applies to your website.  More of this will follow which would make more sense and more of explanations for various areas.

Décor = Images

Now you do want to decorate your house nicely so why not decorate your site the same way?  You want your visitors to feel welcomed.  Your site should be a reflection of you (and your business if building a business site).  It should not be the way anyone else wants it but you.  You decorate your house to your liking so why not decorate your site to you?

Front Door = Entrance Page

This is where your visitors will come to when they visit you.  They don’t always go to the back or side doors but they generally come to your front door.  This is the page the visitor will see upon coming to your site.  This is where you want to put out your “welcome mat” or just say welcome to your visitors.  This is the page they first see to see what you have to offer and that it’s about you (and/or your business if it’s a business site).

Back Door = Admin Area(s)

The back door or admin area(s) is where you go to work on your site or your house.  Not many people will have access to this but you (unless you authorize it).  Not everyone comes knocking to the back door correct?  Not everyone should have access to your back door or admin area(s).  Keep this secure so that no can “steal” or “hack” your site.

Side Door = Authorized Visitors

This is the area(s) that you allow certain visitors to visit.  These areas can be certain links you give out or maybe something you want to give them the “key” or password protect to gain entrance to certain areas of your site.

Other Rooms = Other Pages/Areas

The other rooms or other pages/areas of your site could be something like a blog, a forum, a photo gallery, etc.  These areas are areas that you allow your guest to go and visit.  Just like you generally allow your guest to go into the dining room or kitchen you want to welcome your guest to go to your blog, forum, or another area you have set up for them.

Nails = Links/Content

Now what holds your house all together?  Nails right?  Same thing applies to your site.  The nails on your site would be the links/content on your site.  This holds everything together so that your visitors can go from room to room.  Without nails your house would not hold together, so without links/content you would have nothing on your site holding it together making people stay and visit.
